European vendor completes 5G New Radio pilot in Singapore

European telecommunications vendor Nokia has announced that it has completed the first outdoor pilot of 5G New Radion on 3.5GHz frequency with Singaporean operator StarHub.

Ericsson and Russian service provider MTS have teamed up to provide a superior mobile broadband experience for hundreds of thousands of football fans attending the upcoming global soccer tournament in Russia, through Europe’s largest deployment of Massive MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) to date.

Whether in the stadiums, in fan zones, selected transportation hot spots, or at some of Russia’s most famous landmarks, fans will be able to enjoy higher data speeds in seven of the 11 tournament cities.

In Moscow alone, the deployment covers two stadiums and fan zones, Sheremetyevo airport, Red Square, Tverskaya Street and Gorky Central Park.

Saint Petersburg coverage includes stadium and fan zones, Dvortsovaya Square, and Moskovsky railway station. The other covered cities are Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Niznny Novgorod, Samara and Rostov-on-Don. Ericsson installed AIR 6468 for MTS at more than 40 sites across the seven cities.

Ericsson AIR 6468 is the industry’s first New Radio (NR)-capable radio designed for compatibility with the 5G New Radio standard while also supporting LTE. It features 64 transmit and 64 receive antennas enabling it to support our 5G plug-ins for both Massive MIMO and Multi-User MIMO.

Through the intelligent reuse of system resources, Massive MIMO improves capacity by transmitting data to multiple user devices using the same time and frequency resources with coordinated beam forming and beam steering.

Massive MIMO is making it easier for operators to evolve their networks for a 5G future. This includes Ericsson’s 5G Plug-ins, which are based on many of the breakthrough capabilities in our award-winning 5G Radio Test Bed and 5G Radio Prototypes, currently deployed in operator field trials.

AT&T and Nokia are teaming up to provide virtually seamless Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity around the world. The companies are using Nokia’s Worldwide IoT Network Grid (WING) to offer AT&T’s enterprise customers the benefits of Nokia’s global IoT ecosystem. These include core network, dedicated IoT operations, billing, security, data analytics, and more.

AT&T and Nokia will develop, test and launch the next generation of IoT services. They’ll cover a wide range of industries including transportation, health, manufacturing, retail, agriculture, utilities, consumer electronics and smart cities.

Commercial deployment starts later this year. WING’s core network assets are expected to be available in more than 20 countries across Europe, Asia, North America, South America, and the Middle East by the first quarter of 2020. The collaboration will help set the stage for the evolution to global 5G.

Infinera and Seaborn Networks (Seaborn) tells us they have deployed Infinera’s new XTS-3300 meshponders on Seaborn’s Seabras-1 submarine cable to rapidly offer cloud connectivity services like SeaCloud™. Seabras-1 is the only submarine cable system with a direct connection between São Paulo, Brazil and New York City, enabling Seaborn to offer SeaSpeed™, its proprietary lowest-latency route, between these key global financial centers. 

Seaborn recently announced that Seabras-1 is now ready for operations. At 10,600 kilometers of subsea cable with multiple branching units, Seabras-1 is the longest uncompensated cable deployed connecting North and South America. Seabras-1 is designed to provide additional route diversity to Virginia Beach, Miami, St. Croix, Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro, southern Brazil and Cape Town. Seaborn selected the XTS-3300 to deliver the industry’s highest subsea spectral efficiency and lowest power consumption available in a commercially deployed, compact, easy-to-use platform. 

While many subsea cables can take days to activate capacity, the Seaborn team was able to configure the XTS-3300 and light the fiber in an impressive 30 minutes. Finnish telecommunications firm Nokia has announced that it has launched its 5G Mobile Network Architecture - which is a research project consisting of 14 major partners, that includes Huawei, Telecom Italia and Samsung.

The innovative research initiative will last for a period of two years and will have a budget of €7.7M. The program aims to focus on using network slicing to accelerate pre-standard 5G use cases in a range of areas such as media, automotive and healthcare. In a statement released by Nokia, the telecommunication colossus said it planned on bringing the 5G mobile network architecture from concept to the real world.

The statement read, "As 5G networks need to simultaneously support various services with different requirements, network slicing will be a crucial aspect of the network architecture, providing flexible and adaptive networks which fulfill the 5G requirements.

The consortium of partners involved in the project will involve mobile network players from the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Greece. The collaboration will be crucial in order to utilize technical know-how required to turn the project's vision into reality and will include two real-world test bed implementations.

The formation of this project is the second-phase of the EU-backed 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP). The EC first publicly disclosed the initiative back in December 2013, in which it announced that it planned to invest €700M through its Horizon 2020 program.

Head of end-to-end mobile networks solutions at Nokia Bell Labs, Peter Merz, declared that Nokia was fully committed to the EU-backed infrastructure initiative. Merz said, "Nokia is fully committed to the 5G-PPP: we have delivered know-how and innovative technologies since its launch in 2015 in order to strengthen the European 5G footprint."

In addition to this latest announcement from Nokia, the Finnish telco last month indicated its ambition to broaden its focus on early 5G mobility use cases, which was done in response to growing interest in technology from operators in the US, China, Japan and South Korea ahead of expectations of global deployment in 2019.

Digicel is deploying ZTE’s world-class 4G LTE solutions to deliver the highest-performance mobile broadband services to consumers and businesses across the region.

ZTE’s innovative 4G LTE solutions including Uni-RAN help Digicel upgrade and optimize its infrastructure as part of an ongoing network transformation program, providing subscribers with superior mobile internet connectivity and coverage. ZTE Uni-RAN solutions will support network evolution at Digicel by enabling deployment of next-generation digital services and business innovations.

Deployed by mobile carriers around the world, ZTEs Uni-RAN solution increases the network operation efficiency by prolonging the lifecycle of devices through network upgrades and smooth evolution. Based on ZTE’s SDR (Software Defined Radio) technology, Uni-RAN protects operator’s investment and dramatically reduces network costs and increases the stability and reliability of network operation.

Digicel recently announced its Digicel 2030 global transformation program, promising customers a completely new communications and entertainment experience made possible by a more agile, customer-centric application of resources and investment.

India's 4G telecommunications operator Reliance Jio have agreed to extend its partnership with South Korean colossus Samsung. The announcement between the two organizations was made at Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona. It was disclosed that the pair plan to collaborate in order to enhance the operator's LTE network in rural parts of India. Both parties are confident that if they can successfully implement this project it will take coverage to 90% of the Indian population by the end of 2017.

In September, 2016, the Indian 4G upstart launched India's first nationwide LTE network - and that subsequently led to the company signing up more than 100 million 4G subscribers in just a six month period. South Korean conglomerate Samsung is the operator's sole LTE network provider.
President of Reliance Jio, Jyotindra Thacker revealed that India now has the largest data market globally and that its daily data volumes are 50% higher than that of China. Incredibly, India was ranked 150th in worldwide data volumes prior to Jio entering the market. He said, "We've taken the country from data shortage to data abundance, and we aim to become the fifth largest operator in the world."

Tareq Amin, SVP of Reliance Jio, indicated that it will work closely with Samsung representatives in order to continue development on its network - and in addition to this disclosed that both organizations were keen to improve infrastructure in urban and rural blackspots. He refused to disclose how many new base stations it plans to add in 2017 - but stated that improving coverage is not just a matter of adding more sites. He said, "We'll improve efficiency in the RAN as well as the core, but improving overall network coverage is not just about more sites, it is more complex than that."

Reliance also boldly claimed that it has more than twice as many 4G sites as all of its competitors combined. The announcement comes just days after Bharti Airtel revealed its plans to scrap domestic roaming charges and called for the operators to come together in order to remove international roaming charges and tariffs. The Indian telecommunications sector is one of the most competitive in the world.

Apple has joined a technology industry alliance which aims to establish the best practices for the opportunities and challenges faced within the field of AI. Apple joins Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Facebook, IBM and Google-owned British AI firm DeepMind who last year established the non-profit organization which they called ‘Partnership on AI’.

In a statement issued by the Partnership on AI group, they formally announced Apple’s participation within the research organization as they became the sixth founding member. It further disclosed in the statement that Apple had been involved in a consultancy capacity with the partnership prior to its formal launch in September last year. It was also revealed that the partnership will host its inaugural board meeting in San Francisco in February.

The collaboration between the major tech companies involved in this partnership have stated that in addition to establishing the best practices for the opportunities and challenges of AI- they have also expressed their desire to address issues including privacy, interoperability and collaboration between people and AI systems.

The statement read, “Apple has been involved and has been collaborating with the partnership since before it was first announced and we’re thrilled to formalize its membership. Major technology firms have joined forces in this group and have stated aims including cooperation on "best practices" for AI and using the technology to benefit people and society.”

The partnership was established following concerns raised that new AI efforts could potentially spin out of control and ultimately end up being severely detrimental to society. The collaboration between the tech firms will see them embark on research, the recommendation of best practices, and will publish research under an open license in areas such as ethics, fairness, inclusivity, transparency, privacy and interoperability.

According to the statement, It will seek to examine the collaboration between people and AI systems which will test the trustworthiness, reliability and robustness of the technology.

Tech companies have already invested heavily in creating software in order to help machines think more like people – ideally acting as virtual assistants who get to know how users and attempt to try and anticipate their needs and requirements.

In 2015, Tesla CEO, Elon Musk and SpaceX founder participated in the establishment of a nonprofit research company named Open AI which was devoted to developing AI that would help people and not hurt them. However, he became embroiled in controversy within the technology world by stating that AI could turn on humanity and be its ruin instead of a salvation.

A concern expressed by Musk was that highly advanced artificial intelligence would be left to its own devices, or in the hands of a few people, to the detriment of civilization as a whole.

People joining tech company executives on the Partnership board included Dario Amodei of Open AI along with members of the American Civil Liberties Union; the MacArthur Foundation, and the University of California, Berkeley.

China Mobile have officially announced a partnership with Swedish telecommunications colossus Ericsson as part of their collective ambition on the Internet of Things (IoT) – which will see them attempt to serve 200 million connected devices by the end of the year.

In a joint statement, the companies announced they penned a strategic agreement during a China Mobile Global Partner Conference in December. The statement further disclosed that an in-depth cooperation to manage connections efficiently, provide a consistent service to global enterprise customers and explore new IoT markets were shared by both organizations during the event.

The make-up of the partnership will see the Chinese operator use Ericsson’s Device Connectivity Platform to improve the process of connecting devices, while also deploying services to help drive new revenue. Ericsson’s IoT platform was launched in 2008 and today supports more than 1,500 industry customers through 24 operators.

A spokesman for China Mobile said it will be able to integrate resources of its roaming partners and offer global enterprise customers connectivity based on its service level agreements. They added that it will further benefit “from a common and unified approach to customer portals and selection of access networks.”

For Ericsson, the deal marks another step in its push around IoT as it continues to diversify amid a downturn in its core networks business. In addition to its Device Connection Platform, Ericsson also works with the global M2M association and the Bridge Alliance.

Head of Region North East Asia at Ericsson, Chris Houghton said that IoT applications will help promote the development and deployment of 5G technology. He said: “We look forward to supporting China Mobile and developing this business while accelerating large-scale deployments of Internet of Things across the world.”
