U.S. Cellular has signed a five-year deal with Nokia in an effort to modernize the company's network by providing its end-to-end 5G technology, software and services solutions.
This will enable U.S. Cellular to deliver innovative services to its customers and expand into new customer and enterprise segments with 5G services and solutions.
The new contract builds upon the 5G trial activities Nokia and U.S. Cellular have been engaged in during the last year. As part of the agreement Nokia will modernize and build out a 5G network for U.S. Cellular across its markets using 5G capabilities compliant with 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR) standards.

U.S. Cellular will leverage multiple products across Nokia's end-to-end 5G technology, software and professional services portfolio. Nokia's 5G portfolio is based on its commercial AirScale radio platform and a cloud-based network architecture.
5G promises to enable faster speeds, massive connectivity, decade-long battery life for sensors and super-responsive and reliable networks for customers. This will unleash on-demand virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences, driverless vehicles, medical monitoring, advanced industrial automation services, and so much more - all requiring ubiquitous low latency connectivity.
US Cellular, the fifth-largest full-service wireless carrier in the United States, and Ericsson, have completed a joint testing of various 5G use cases at 28GHz. The tests, a significant step toward the launch of a 5G network, were conducted in rural and suburban environments in Madison, Wisconsin.
The trials were conducted under a variety of real-world conditions, and they achieved peak throughput speed of 8.5Gbps. In addition, virtual reality was tested, achieving peak speeds of 4Gbps. This virtual reality test was one of the highlights of the trial, as it proved how the ultra-high speeds and low latency of 5G will enable VR applications.
The companies also tested augmented reality, advanced beamforming and Massive MIMO. The live over-the-air trials expanded on 5G trials between the two companies in 2016 that achieved 9 Gbps at 15GHz.
“This was an important trial for us to understand the propagation characteristics and path loss at 28Ghz, and we are pleased with our learnings,” said Michael S. According to the most recent Ericsson Mobility Report, approximately 25 percent of all subscriptions will be 5G in North America in 2022, representing the highest market penetration in the world.

U.S. Cellular and Nokia have collaborated to test 5G in North America and demonstrate 5G fixed wireless in both indoor and outdoor environments. As a result, the companies proved how a next-generation network can provide faster speeds and lower latency for U.S. Cellular's customers.
The 5G testing used 28GHz spectrum through an experimental license from the FCC and Nokia's commercially-available, 5G-ready AirScale radio platform to stream six simultaneous 4K ultra high-definition videos. For the outdoor testing, which was conducted at U.S. Cellular's technology center in Schaumburg, Ill., the team set up a point-to-point, clear line of sight scenario between a base station and user equipment.
To test the impact of a real world environment, impairments such as dry wall, windows and metal panels were introduced, and testing was repeated by moving the base station and user equipment behind trees and foliage. The indoor testing was done in U.S. Cellular's lab. In both environments, the tests delivered speeds of 5Gbps and ultra-low latency under 2 milliseconds (ms) over the 5G wireless link. Nokia and U.S. Cellular plan further network testing and collaboration towards the development of 5G standards.
