Huawei launches world’s most advanced high-end audio product

With the rapid development of 5G and AI technologies, the era of the IoT (Internet of Thing) is accelerating. According to the Huawei GCI Report 2025, the number of digital devices per capita in the world will increase from two in 2015 to twenty-five in 2025. That type of rapid growth begs the question: how will consumers make natural and smooth interactions between their increasing number of digital devices? The answer, of course, lies in instant automatic speech recognition.

Compared with the touch-based interaction of the mobile internet era, automatic speech recognition can achieve faster receipt and remittance of content. Moreover, speech is a more natural and efficient means of the type of interaction which will play an increasingly important role in the era of Internet of Everything.

As the most convenient and private touch point of interactive voice response, headphones will become an indispensable part of consumers’ life. Stable connection and seamless switching between multiple devices, as well as high-quality audio has become an inevitable trend in the development of the wireless audio industry.

Due to increasing user demand for high-end audio products in the era of full-scenario AI life, Huawei has released the world’s 1st BT 5.1 & BLE 5.1 wearable chip at IFA2019. The Kirin A1 supports TWS (True Wireless Stereo) headsets and wearables and combines five major audio product forms with LiteOS to solve the industry’s pain points on chips and end-to-end systems while providing consumers with a high-end audio experience across all scenarios.

The Kirin A1 chip is the industry's first BT/BLE dual-mode chip to be certified by the Bluetooth 5.1 standard. It has a highly integrated 3+1 modular architecture: advanced Bluetooth processing unit, powerful audio processing unit, and ultra-low power consumption App processor and a separate power management unit, ensuring an efficient and stable connection experience.

Early TWS headsets were single-channel transmissions, divided into main and secondary headphones. The mobile phone transmits the signals of the left and right channels to the main earphone at the same time, and then the main earphone forwards one of the channels to the secondary earphone. This type of connection has problems such as transmission inefficiency, long delays, connection instability, and large power consumption of the main headphone.

The current TWS headset transmission method has been improved: the main headset no longer needs to forward audio signals to the secondary headphones, and the secondary headphones now directly obtain information from the mobile phone. However, signal transmission between the two headphones is still required and there is still some interference when the left and right ears transmit signal through the human body.

Huawei's self-developed dual-channel synchronous transmission technology can make the left and right earphones directly receive signals from the mobile phone end, avoiding the interference between the two headphones.

Thanks to this technology, the HUAWEI FreeBuds 3 TWS headset can significantly reduce audio latency during gaming to 190ms (data from Huawei Labs), keeping the game sound and picture synchronized.

Based on Huawei's new generation Bluetooth channel selection algorithm, taken from the intelligent frequency hopping technology in the communication field, HUAWEI FreeBuds 3 TWS can dynamically identify the frequency band affected by Wi-Fi and hop to an undisturbed channel, quickly adapting to environmental changes, in order to achieve higher anti-interference ability and bring a smooth audio experience even in complex environments such as airports and shopping malls. 

At the same time, the Kirin A1 has a powerful audio processing DSP that supports real-time recognition of noise and ambient sound, creating a high-quality phone call and music experience. Through the accurate 3A noise reduction algorithm, it can effectively weaken the ambient noise and let people hear more clearly. The enhanced speech recognition algorithm allows users to activate the device with their own voice, easily access the AI assistant and achieve fingerless operation.

An operating system plays a critical role in making IoT-based devices smart. Huawei LiteOS, developed by Huawei in 2012, is an IoT-oriented software platform integrating an IoT operating system and middleware. Since its release in 2015, Huawei LiteOS has been widely used in various domains such as Huawei smartphones, personal wearable devices, Smart Home scenarios, urban public services, etc.

LiteOS is a platform that connects IoT hardware and service applications. It is adaptable to mainstream chips and modules, helping to maximize performance. It can abstract functions of hardware and generate standard interfaces with a wealth of capabilities (such as device-cloud interconnection, low power consumption, sensors, and AI). In addition, it supports a wide range of business scenarios and provides various technical frameworks and SDKs. The HUAWEI Freebuds 3 is equipped with LiteOS, which enables faster connection between multiple Huawei devices.

Huawei moves to computer market

Huawei will step up its presence in the global market for computer hardware, a top company official said, as the Chinese telecom giant weathers a US assault on its 5G network and smartphone business.

Deputy chairman Ken Hu said the strategy is based on expectations that “incredible computing power” is going to be needed as the world turns to complicated and resource-hogging future technologies such as artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles.

“We have a lot of challenges ahead of us. We need to beef up our computing power, explore new architectures, and develop processors that meet people's needs across all scenarios,” Hu said at a tech conference in Shanghai.

Huawei is already the world leader in telecom networking equipment, the number two smartphone producer, and is expected to dominate in ultra-fast future 5G networks. But it has been swept into the trade war between China and the United States, with its future prospects now in doubt owing to a US campaign to isolate the company. A push into the market for computer architecture and software could add a new front in Huawei's battle with the Trump administration.

Hu cited independent estimates saying the market will be worth more than $2 trillion by 2023, adding that Huawei would invest an additional $1.5 billion toward that effort. He gave no timeframe or figures on current investment.

“We will continue to invest,” he said. “Starting with the most difficult challenge ahead of us - making breakthroughs in architecture - to developing processors, we're going to help expand the industry and build out the ecosystem.”

Mayor of Moscow announces plans to launch 5G network

On 7th June 2019, during the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, Sergey Sobyanin, the Mayor of Moscow, and Alexey Kornya, CEO of mobile network operator MTS, signed an agreement on cooperation for the purposes of developing communication services and information-telecommunication technologies in the city of Moscow. 

The agreement envisages pilot projects aimed at developing new digital technologies and communication services in Moscow, including in the fields of virtual and augmented reality, Internet of Things, Smart City, and 5G technologies. For these purposes the required information-telecommunication infrastructure will be created in the city.

The authorised agency responsible for implementing the agreement on behalf of Moscow is the city’s Department of Information Technology (DIT). 

“Moscow is setting itself the task of reducing operator expenditure on creating infrastructure for the commercial launch of 5G by removing administrative barriers,” said Eduard Lysenko, Head of DIT.

The agreement has been signed in light of the provisions of the state programme Digital Economy of the Russian Federation, which calls for the creation of pilot segments of the fifth generation mobile communication networks by the end of 2019 and the commercial launch of 5G by 2022.

MTS and Huawei launch 5G zone in Moscow

Russian mobile operator MTS has launched a 5G zone at VDNKh (All-Russian Exhibition Center), one of Moscow’s major attractions. Equipped by Huawei and functioning on the 28GHz and 4.9GHz frequency bands, the network became operational on Thursday.

It will test so-called Smart City technology, designed to improve security and urban services management, as well as helping to develop Moscow’s transport system.

The agreement between MTS and Huawei was signed in June during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

5G is speeding up the development of self-driving vehicles in Moscow together with other future technologies, according to Eduard Lysenko, Head of the city’s Department of Information Technology: “Moscow is looking into the implementation of telemedicine and IoT technologies in city services which require a secure and fast connection”.

While the super-fast network is currently available around only one of the pavilions in the VDNKh complex, the pilot zone is expected to expand and cover almost the whole of the VDNKh area by 2020.

Owners of 5G-capable smartphones will be able to enjoy super-fast internet connections after the network’s commercial launch, as the first phone connected to the network demonstrated an internet speed of 1.2Gbps. This means it will take around one minute to download a full HD movie.

Moscow’s first 5G zone was launched earlier this month and covers the famous Tverskaya Street. Swedish telecom company Ericsson provided the equipment for the network, which is run by Russian mobile operator Tele2. By the end of this year, Moscow is expected to have four pilot zones, each operated by one of Russia’s four major telecom providers.

Huawei unveils world’s first flagship 5G SoC

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG), delivered a keynote speech titled "Rethink Evolution" at the IFA, and unveiled the latest flagship Kirin 990 series: Kirin 990 and its 5G version.

"Kirin 990 (5G) is the world's first 5G SoC, and it will enable end users to access superb 5G connectivity experience one step ahead in the first year of 5G commercialization”, said Richard. “To meet users’ requirements for enhanced 5G experiences in the 5G era, Kirin 990 (5G) has been fully upgraded in terms of performance and power efficiency, AI computing, and ISP, extending mobile phone experiences to a new level."

Kirin 990, which was unveiled with Kirin 990 (5G), is also designed to bring impressively elevated performance, energy efficiency, AI capabilities, and photography, offering better experiences to a more extensive group of 4G smartphone users.

Huawei’s Kirin 990 (5G) is the first 5G SoC in the world and supports the industry's most compact 5G smartphone solution. With the cutting-edge 7 nm+ EUV manufacturing process, Kirin 990 (5G) is integrated with a 5G modem, achieving a smaller area and lower power consumption. Moreover, Kirin 990 (5G) is the first full-frequency 5G SoC to support both non-standalone (NSA) and standalone (SA) architectures as well as TDD/FDD full frequency bands, enabling it to accommodate hardware requirements under diverse networks and networking modes. Microsoft deems US treatment of Huawei unfair

Microsoft President and Chief Legal Officer Brad Smith says the way the U.S. government is treating Huawei is un-American. As far as he knows, China’s leading maker of networking equipment and mobile phones should be allowed to buy U.S. technology, including software from his company.

TIM Brazil has selected Nokia AirFrame servers featuring new, 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors to virtualize its datacenters by the end of 2021.

TIM is the first operator in Latin America to adopt the AirFrame technology for its datacenter servers to improve server capacity and deliver better service quality, internet access and video consumption for its users across Brazil.

The agreement represents a major step in TIM Brazil’s cloud and digitalization journey, supported by Nokia, as the operator creates advanced services for its customers.

The deployment consists of 1000 state-of-the-art AirFrame servers, virtualizing network functions to guarantee better customer experience. Alongside the creation of edge datacenters, the agreement with Nokia also signals important progress for TIM Brazil as a company as it moves towards 5G, a requirement of which is evolving to a cloud core for network activities.

The 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors were launched globally on 2 April 2019, and this agreement marks the first use of the new generation in Latin America. Nokia and Intel highlighted the capabilities available to customers through this technological partnership at MWC 2019 via a demonstration of VR gaming over a 5G network. 

“Nokia’s unique solution, designed to support precisely this evolution to 5G, will give TIM Brazil a crucial ongoing competitive advantage as they evolve their core networks into cloud.
