On Monday the 13th of May 2019, Whatsapp admitted yet to another breach in their security system: enabling targeting spyware to be installed on phones through voice calls. An Israeli spying firm indeed has been accused of using that security hole in Whatsapp used by 1.5 billion people.
Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, announced the Snapdragon X55 5G modem, its second-generation 5G New Radio (NR) modem. Snapdragon X55 is a 7-nanometer single-chip integrated 5G to 2G multimode modem that supports 5G NR mmWave and sub-6 GHz spectrum bands with up to 7 gigabits per second (Gbps) download speeds and 3 Gbps upload speeds over 5G, and Category 22 LTE with up to 2.5 Gbps LTE download speeds.
The Snapdragon X55 5G modem is designed for global 5G rollouts with support for all major frequency bands, whether mmWave or sub-6 GHz, supports TDD and FDD modes of operations and is capable of both Standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) network deployments – providing flexibility and enabling virtually all deployment types globally. In addition to deployments in greenfield frequency bands allocated for 5G, the Snapdragon X55 modem is engineered to support dynamic spectrum sharing between 4G and 5G, enabling operators to accelerate 5G deployments by using their existing 4G spectrum holdings to deliver both 4G and 5G services dynamically.

South Korean smartphone colossus Samsung has announced that its pre-orders for its Galaxy Note 8 have surpassed the highest-ever for the Note Series. Samsung believes its latest premium smartphone which exceeded the pre-orders enjoyed by the Note 7 – will protect the market dominance it currently assumes as it faces a stiff battle with Apple to remain on the top spot.
Apple has aggressively marketed its latest iPhone - as it focuses on the tenth anniversary of the inception of the inaugural iPhone, which was first launched in 2007. Apple’s newest iPhone will be formally unveiled to much media hype later this week.
Samsung have announced that sales of its Note 8 devices will hit markets in the US and South Korea on Friday – and management within the South Korean conglomerate buoyed by impressive pre-order numbers have expressed their confidence that the Note 8 will be a bug hit amongst consumers.
The smartphone incumbent claimed that it had 650,00 pre-order for the Note 8 handsets over a five day period, with orders coming from over 40 countries. President of Samsung Electronics mobile communications business DJ Koh said the initial response to the new smartphone was ‘very encouraging’.
Samsung suffered a mitigated and well-documented disaster with its Note 7. Reports of the devices catching fires and in some cases self-combusting due to faulty batteries forced the company to recall all of its Note 7 units from the market just a short few months into its life-cycle. Samsung lost billions of dollars due to the Note 7 fiasco, but it also more significantly tarnished its reputation amongst many of its customers.
However, the world’s biggest smartphone manufacturer by market share took the decision to retain the Note brand after Samsung conducted a survey of 5,000 Galaxy Note users. 85% of respondents expressed brand loyalty, so executives decided to continue the Note brand. Samsung launched a lengthy investigation into the Note 7 scandal and discovered the root cause of the issues before embarking on the development of Note 8 handsets.
The Note 8 will retail at between $930-960 in the US, and that will include a number of attractive call and data packages incorporated in that deal. When US smartphone giant Apple introduce its new iPhone to the market it will squeeze the Note 8. However, many analysts have claimed that the excessive cost of the iPhone which will reportedly retail at around $1,000 has drained the enthusiasm amongst a lot of consumers worldwide.
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has unveiled its newest flagship smartphone – and the organization is confident the device can have a positive impact in the saturated smartphone industry. Xiaomi CEO conceded that the company had suffered a significant sales slump last year, and that it was going through somewhat of a ‘transitional period’.
However, that pessimism has been replaced with optimism with the launch of the ‘Mi 6’ smartphone. Management at Xiaomi believe the new device can serve as a catalyst that will see them make up for lost ground on rivals, after a disappointing 2016. The Chinese conglomerate launched the ‘Mi 6’ at an event in Beijing, having shelved plans to launch it at MWC in Barcelona, earlier this year.
Well what is so different about this product that has Xiaomi representatives believing it will provide a pathway back to challenge the titans of the smartphone sector? The first striking feature is the similarity to that of the iPhone 7, but the price isn’t one of them. The entry model — featuring 64 GB of storage — comes in at 2499 RMB, that’s around $360, with a 128 GB option (2899 RMB, $420) and ceramic edition (2999 RMB, $435) completing the range. All three are far cheaper than iPhone equivalents, but, interestingly for Xiaomi, the range is more expensive than the company’s usual flagship prices.
Another quite obvious iPhone comparison that stands out is that there is no headphone jack on Xiaomi’s new device, just as Apple elected to do with last year’s iPhone 7. The Chinese firm has seemingly followed that trend, or is doing what makes sense for itself in this instance, that is already ammo for Xiaomi skeptics.
With the Mi 6, Xiaomi has bumped up its RAM to 6GB, the most it has ever offered in a smartphone. The device is powered by a Snapdragon 835 10nm processor with a 64-bit, octa-core CPU with a whopping 3350 mAh battery that the company said will last a day thanks to “optimization” controls built into its MIUI operating system.
The device will go on sale from a number of selected stores in China in the next few days, expansion into international markets carefully selected by executives will commence at a later date, Xiaomi declined to provide a specific date it plans to initiate this launch. Xiaomi suffered a huge blow when the dynamic face of the organization, Hugo Barra decided to quit the company to lead Facebook’s VR department.
Xiaomi revealed it cleared $1 billion in revenue in India, its second largest market behind China, last year, while Lei Jun added that it ranks second in the country, but nothing has been said of its performance in the other 20-odd countries where its phones are sold.
Nokia has relaunched one of its most popular ever devices at MWC in Barcelona. The Finnish technology company has reintroduced the ‘3310’ – which was first launched to the mobile phone industry 17 years ago. Nokia’s ‘3310’ – is considered as an iconic handset due to its incredible popularity amongst customers in the early 00’s when Nokia dominated the mobile phone market.
One of the popular features of the ‘3310’ was its sturdiness and was revered for its incredible battery life that enabled the device to last for days without needing to be charged. More than 126 million were produced before the product was phased out in 2005.
However, at MWC, Nokia has unveiled its modern version of the ‘3310’. Some analysts are predicting great success for the new look Nokia in some regions – with the general consensus amongst technology experts that the reintroduction of the nostalgic handset is the best way to relaunch Nokia’s phone brand!
The revamped device will be sold under license by Finnish start-up firm HMD Global – who in addition to the ‘3310’ unveiled several Nokia-branded Android smartphones. Ben Wood, a technology consultant from CCS Insight said there was huge affection for the phone. He said “The 3310 was the first mass-market mobile and there's a massive amount of nostalgia and affection for it," commented Ben Wood from the technology consultancy CCS Insight. If HMD had just announced three Android devices they would have barely got a couple of column inches in the press. So, the 3310 is a very clever move and we expect it will sell in significant volumes."
Nokia made the announcement at the tech show in Barcelona which has once again drawn a massive crowd of technology exhibitors, vendors and tech experts to the Spanish city from all over the world. LG, Huawei and Lenovo have unveiled new devices at MWC. Nokia no longer makes phones itself, but manufactures telecoms equipment, Ozo virtual reality cameras, and health kit under the Withings brand.
The new 3310 qualifies as a "feature phone" rather than a smartphone as it only provides limited internet facilities. However, its advantage over more powerful handsets is its battery life. HMD says the color-screened phone has up to a month's standby time and delivers more than 22 hours of talk time.
It also comes with the modern version of the classic game Snake preinstalled. Its launch price is €49 ($51,75; £41.51) and it expected to be a big hit in regions such as India and the Philippines.
Apple announced its intentions to start manufacturing their products in India a number of weeks ago – and now speculation is rife that the first device it will produce in the region will be the iPhone SE. Sources have suggested the manufacturing process will take place in the southern Indian city of Bangalore.
The US tech giants disclosed its plans to start building phones in India by the end of April. However, there was some confusion expressed when IT Minister of the State of Karnataka, Priyank Kharge, tweeted the details of the announcement which signaled when Apple will begin operations, but then subsequently deleted it.
Reports circulating in India have indicated that Apple will produce between 300,000 and 400,000 iPhone SE units in a plant that will be handled by Taiwanese manufacturer Wistron. However, the company’s Indian director claimed that they’re unaware of any such arrangements.
Analysts believe that producing the iPhone SE could make sense for Apple – the SE will be cheaper and smaller than some of its recent flagship models. The device has a powerful A9 processor and 4-inch Retina display, and is capable of shooting 4K video with its 12 megapixel camera.
The fact that the SE may well be manufactured locally should result in significantly reducing the cost even further, thanks to tax benefits of about 12%. This should inevitable result in attracting more Indian customers to Apple’s ecosystem which includes additional services such as iTunes and Apple Music.
The US tech leaders had previously south incentives which including a tax holiday and other related exemptions in order to pave the way for its entry into the India manufacturing market. However, India’s revenue secretary said it was impossible to extend such benefits to Apple, as the country is about to implement a unified Good and Services Tax system in the forthcoming financial year.
American entertainment company Netflix has developed a feature which allows viewers to watch content while offline – in an effort to avoid major data-connection charges for its viewership. In a statement management at Netflix said that many of its most popular TV series and movies will be made available for viewers when they’re offline.
Netflix which was founded in 1997 – specialize in streaming media and video on demand online. It is reported to be worth around $33 billion that has been an incredible success all over the world since expanding internationally in 2010. Netflix is available in 190 countries and has over 86 million subscribers. It has been suggested that the new feature, which allows viewers to watch content offline, is a direct response to Amazon - who have recently launched an international expansion of its streaming service.
Product innovation chief at Netflix, Eddy Wu said that the feature was developed due to demand, as it was evident that consumers wanted this capability on their Netflix account, while he also disclosed they are working with lots of partners globally in an effort to secure downloading rights for the content on its service.
“Many of your favourite streaming series and movies will be available for download and offline viewing on mobile devices. While many members enjoy watching Netflix at home, we've often heard they also want to continue their 'Stranger Things' binge while on airplanes and other places where internet is expensive or limited. Just click the download button on the details page for a film or TV series and you can watch it later without an internet connection.”
Netflix did not offer details on how much content would be available offline, noting that it was in discussion with copyright owners.
Wu added: “Netflix is working with lots of partners globally to get downloading rights for the bulk of the content on our service. This is an ongoing effort as we know consumers want this capability and we are working to provide it."
Netflix, which is in a global push and has more than 86 million members, is facing increasing competition from rivals including Amazon, which also is in the midst of an international expansion of its streaming service. Amazon already allows downloads of videos -- noting that some content is restricted by copyright holders in terms of offline viewing. Netflix users had been unable to download and view videos offline through its mobile application, but workarounds had been offered by third-party apps.
